Summary

Fresh tensions erupted along the Assam-Nagaland border in the Seleng Hat area of Jorhat district following reports of alleged encroachment of land and threats by individuals from Nagaland.

In January 2025, residents of Rajabari voiced concerns after a group of Naga individuals allegedly confronted Santosh Karmakar, a local resident, for speaking to the press about their illegal settlement. Out of fear, Karmakar and his family felt compelled to flee their home. The All Adivasi Students’ Association (AASA) strongly criticized the intimidation, warning that protests would follow if authorities did not step in to guarantee Karmakar’s security. This led to an increased deployment of police forces.

A member of the Adivasi Students Union told the Assam Tribune, “The Assam-Nagaland border in Rajabari is a constant source of fear. Despite the presence of three Assam Rifles battalions, these miscreants operate with impunity, often armed.”

Locals also claimed that Naga settlers have cleared large parts of the Tiru Hills Reserve Forests in the Mariani region of Jorhat.

The Assam Tea Tribe Students Association (ATTSA) also submitted a memorandum to the Teok Circle Officer, highlighting rising tensions in the area.

However, Nagaland officials stated that they had no knowledge of the incident. An offical from Nagaland told Mokokchung Times, “No news from our side. A BM-level [Border Magistrate] meeting was conducted today, but this issue was not known even to the BMs of both states.”

On 23 January 2025, a joint inspection meeting took place between EAC Longchem and the Border Magistrate of Tzürangkong, alongside their Jorhat counterparts from Assam. According to officials from Nagaland, the primary focus of the meeting was the incident at Yajang C village, with the goal of ensuring peace and stability in the area. An official stated, “The discussion was primarily on maintaining peace. It is just the beginning of a series of meetings that will take place.”

The tensions escalated further after miscreants from across the border assaulted Rajabari villagers on 31 March 2025. The miscreants destroyed bamboo fences, fired shots, and physically assaulted villagers. They even abducted four persons—Bikram Pradhan, Joydeep Patar Tanti, Akash Patar Tanti, and Sanjeet Patar Tanti. After being taken, the abducted individuals were reportedly forced to sign blank papers before being released.

The Assam-Nagaland border dispute remains an ongoing challenge. It is to be noted that in December 2023, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio engaged in discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to address the issue. Since then, both states' leadership has participated in multiple high-level meetings in an effort to find a resolution.
