Summary

On 9 December 2025, the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department carried out an anti-encroachment drive and removed mustard crop cultivated by local tribal communities over 6.529 hectares of land in the Isagarh area of Ashoknagar district.

Around 50 forest personnel, including Shivpuri Forest Conservator Adarsh Srivastava, Divisional Forest Officer Pratibha Ahirwar, and Sub-Divisional Officer SP Shakya were present at the site during the drive. Two JCB machines were used to flatten the standing mustard crops cultivated by tribal families on the "encroached" land.

While the Forest Department officials stated that the land fell within the notified forest boundary and agricultural activities were not authorised in the area, the tribals said that they had been using the land for cultivation for several years and that the land formed an essential part of their seasonal livelihood. A resident of Dhakoni village near Isagarh told LCW on condition of anonymity that the tribals alleged that they were not given adequate notice or an opportunity to verify or contest the department’s classification. The affected farmers also expressed concern over the loss of their crop as many farming households depend on mustard cultivation for income and subsistence.

According to a news report, some tribal families had constructed temporary huts on the forest land and begun cultivating the land without legal authorisation. Eviction notices were reportedly issued earlier, but the tribals continued to stay and cultivate the area. When they sowed mustard in the field, the official decided to take strict action considering the seriousness of the matter.

Officials said that any kind of occupation or cultivation on forest land is completely illegal, making this action necessary. They added that the drive was part of a broader movement to reclaim encroached land.

The incident highlights the need for a more balanced approach, one that protects the environment while also respecting the constitutional rights of Scheduled Tribes.
