Residents of Maikhuli village held a large protest on 11 July 2025 against a recent border settlement signed between Assam and Meghalaya. The protest centred around a community fish pond that villagers claimed has been unfairly ceded to Assam under the new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two states as part of their ongoing border resolution efforts.
Maikhuli, situated along the disputed interstate boundary, is one of six areas part of ongoing talks between the two states. Villagers claim the fish pond in question lies within Meghalaya’s Ri Bhoi district and has been essential to their economic life for decades.
According to the villagers, the pond supports the village’s livelihood through fish farming, generating revenue that has helped finance the local school and fulfil other community needs. Protesters argue that handing the pond over to Assam would be wrong and harmful to their economy. The villagers are demanding that the Meghalaya government take urgent steps to reclaim the pond.
During the rally, Maikhuli village headman Nicholas Marak and former headman Heniton Marak expressed their anger. “Under no circumstances will we allow the fishery pond to be handed over to Assam. This pond has belonged to us for over 50 years— it is part of our identity, our survival, and our future,” they declared.
The leaders also revealed that the village has submitted multiple petitions to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, urging the state government to revise the MoU, but haven't received any response.
Residents have warned that they are ready to take further action if the government does not help them in reclaiming the pond. They urged both state governments to revise the agreement.
“We will not accept any decision that leads to the loss of our resources. This pond belongs to Maikhuli, and we will continue to fight for it”, said one of the protest leaders.
