Summary

On 28 March 2025, violence broke out between residents of Laruri and Mimi villages along the border between Kiphire and Meluri districts in Nagaland.

Meluri was carved out of the Phek district in November 2024. The violent incident that left four people injured occurred in the disputed area (near Khongkha village), which falls under the Pungro Police Station.

The Phokhungri Area Public Organisation (PAPO) condemned the violence, alleging that armed individuals from Mimi Circle attacked the workers around 5:30 PM.

The Nagaland Police reported that the conflict started in the evening while workers from Laruri and Sütsu were working on the construction of an approach road and collecting firewood in the disputed area. Some armed persons, suspected to be from Mimi, allegedly started firing without warning. While retreating, the Laruri-Sütsü group was ambushed again near the Tizü bridge by unknown persons. Some structures, including huts and a house, were also set on fire.

Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland Yanthungo Patton visited the injured at Naga Hospital in Kohima. He condemned the violence and stated, “Such incidents not only disrupt peace but also harm the bonds that hold our communities together.” Patton shared that three of the injured had been released, while one was still receiving treatment. He also informed that he had tasked the Deputy Commissioners of Kiphire and Meluri to investigate and submit a report to the State Government.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC) and the Pochury Hoho (PH)—two tribal apex bodies—held joint meetings in Kohima on 4 April, 2025. In a joint statement, they expressed concern about the rising tensions over the land dispute, stating, “such acts of violence are deeply regrettable as it threatens the peace and harmony shared between two communities and pray for the speedy recovery of all the victims.”

The two bodies stressed that the incident should not be viewed as an inter-tribal conflict. “The recent incident is not between two tribal entities but involves a few villages,” the joint statement clarified. They also appealed to the community members to “uphold the values of peace and unity as we work together towards a constructive solution.”
