A major land conflict has erupted in Mulasana village, Gandhinagar, centered around the alleged illegal allocation of ₹20,000 crore worth of land designated for grazing to private builders. The controversy has significantly heightened tensions between local farmers and the government.
Over the past decade, builders and investors from various cities have acquired nearly all the farmers' land and swapped several hectares of reserved lands intended for village projects in Mulasana, situated near Thol and approximately 20 kilometers west of Ahmedabad. In some instances, land that could not be converted from agricultural to non-agricultural use was seized by land mafias.
Farmers in Mulasana are resolute in their fight to reclaim their land. They have threatened to march to Gandhinagar with their cattle if their grievances are not addressed. According to a report by the Gujarat Smaachar, farmers have been barred from accessing their fields despite having proper documentation since 1952. They accuse the police of harassment and landlords of illegally seizing their land, alleging that the government is favouring builders over their rights. The farmers are demanding urgent action to address their concerns and restore their land rights.
The situation deteriorated further following the arrest of former Gandhinagar District Collector S K Langa on 11 July, 2023, for his alleged involvement in the land dealings. Despite Langa's detention, construction on the disputed land has continued, exacerbating the farmers' demands for their land and grazing rights. He has been charged under IPC sections 409 (criminal breach of trust), 217 (public servant disobeying the law with the intent to save a person from punishment), 218 (public servant creating incorrect records or documents) as well as under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The High Court has observed that Langa misused his authority as a Collector for personal gain, passing orders for the allotment of 30,431 square meters of government-owned land to interested parties. This has been deemed a prima facie criminal offense.
The land dispute in Mulasana is also linked to a long-standing scam dating back to 1918. Land originally allocated for cow grazing on a 99-year leasehold was fraudulently acquired through bogus documents. The land, initially designated as agricultural, was improperly classified as non-agricultural by the then Gandhinagar Collector S K Langa.
In response to the ongoing conflict, Congress Leader Amit Chavda visited Mulasana and nearby villages to assess the situation. Chavda expressed strong support for the farmers and criticised the government's handling of the issue. He warned that if the government fails to address the farmers' demands, a major protest in Gandhinagar could be on the horizon.
