Summary

The Village Forest Committee of Ganga-Chimi Panchayat has expressed grave concern over illicit land excavation and unapproved roadworks unfolding in the ecologically sensitive zones of Papum Pare district in Arunachal Pradesh. In a report published by The Arunachal Times, the committee urged authorities to stop the construction of two controversial roads linking Chimi to Taipu, and another connecting Ganga to Tago, claiming that the activities flout key forest protection regulations.

Locals stated that the illegal activity has not only damaged the forest but also contaminated the natural water sources. Villagers are now forced to drink muddy and unsafe water, posing serious health hazards to the community.

The committee noted that it had officially reported the matter to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests on 10 April 2025. Following the complaint, the Range Forest Officer (RFO) was instructed to take immediate action and confiscate the machinery involved. However, unidentified individuals reportedly removed the equipment from the site before authorities could intervene, raising fresh concerns for the committee.

Despite repeated efforts to urge the Range Forest Officer (RFO) of the Poma Division Wildlife Sanctuary to act against the culprits, villagers said that no effective action has been taken so far. They added that the RFO did not respond to multiple calls made by the committee members. They further voiced strong concern over the ongoing operation of heavy machinery in the Tago area, which they claim blatantly disregards established forest conservation regulations.

The Village Forest Committee (VFC) submitted a formal appeal to the Governor on 14 April, urging immediate intervention. The petition emphasised the urgent need to enforce key environmental laws, including the Forest (Conservation) Act and the Wildlife Protection Act. It also demanded the prompt demolition of illegally constructed roads. The VFC outlined two primary demands. The first is the complete removal of unauthorised roads linking Chimi to Taipu and Ganga to Tago, and the second demand is stringent legal action to be taken against those found guilty of breaching environmental norms.
