In July 2024, the Aralam Farm management decided to lease out 1,655 acres of land to private individuals for participatory farming. The land, located in the Kannur district, is part of the Aralam farmland bought by the Kerala government in 2004 for a tribal rehabilitation centre. The move has sparked opposition from tribals and local organisations.
As part of the agreement, 530 acres of land in Farm Block One have been leased to Malur Agro Farm Private Limited for 30 years, 1,000 acres to Agri Farm in Ernakulam for four years for pineapple cultivation, 25 acres to KVS Food Production Company in Ernakulam for 30 years to run a pig farm, and 100 acres to Iritty Bavali Commune Company for 30 years.
On 11 September 2024, tribal organisations, including the Adivasi Dalit Munnetra Samiti and the Adivasi Gotra Jana Sabha, staged a protest at the Kannur Collectorate against the transfer of the farm to private individuals. On 8 November, the Adivasi Gotra Jana Sabha staged another protest. Led by the ruling party CPM's Kannur district secretary M V Jayarajan, the dharna demanded that the lease be cancelled in February 2025.
Protesters pointed out that the Kerala government purchased the 7,500 acres of Aralam farmland from the central government by paying Rs 42 crore from the Scheduled Tribes Rehabilitation Fund. The entire land was supposed to be used for the rehabilitation of landless tribals. However, 4,054 acres of land were given for rehabilitation, and the remaining 3,446 acres of land was used to set up the Aralam Farming Corporation (Kerala) Limited in 2010 to provide livelihood to tribal communities.
The Tribal Welfare Committee has accused some department heads of making long-term lease agreements on land at their own discretion without the permission of the government or the Scheduled Tribes Development Department.
In a report by the Hindu, the Aralam Farming Corporation denied leasing land to private entrepreneurs. Corporation administrative officer Nitheesh Kumar clarified that claims of six farms being leased were false.
The farm management authorities argue that the company has the power to enter into an an agreement with any individual or other cooperative company for the land in Aralam Farm as per the company's bylaws. The management says that the agreement will provide an investment of Rs 200 crore, employment to about 300 people from the rehabilitation area every day, and an income share of of Rs 96 crore.
According to Sreeraman Koyyon, president of the Adivasi Dalit Munnetra Samiti (ADMS), the land is being leased to private individuals without any upfront payment, with only 20 percent of annual profits promised to the farm. He stressed that the land earmarked for tribals should not be diverted for other purposes, citing a 2015 agreement with then Chief Minister Oommen Chandy that prohibited leasing agricultural land for commercial use.
Stating that around 5,000 landless tribals in Kannur are currently waiting for land, Koyyon argued that if each family were given one acre, the landlessness issue could be resolved. He has also demanded that the farm be declared an autonomous tribal panchayat under the Panchayat (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act (PESA).
