Summary

A tense confrontation erupted between farmers and officials of the Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO) in Yavarpura village of Deesa taluka in Gujarat's Banaskantha district. The dispute arose over the installation of electricity poles on their land without prior notice or consent.

In October 2025, the GETCO team, accompanied by police personnel, began surveying the fields and digging pits for electricity poles. The farmers, who claim they were not informed about the project, objected strongly to the work. "We were not consulted, and now our grazing land is being disrupted. If the poles are installed here, we should be paid rent or given alternative land," a farmer told Bhaskar.

Despite repeated appeals from the farmers to halt the work and allow them two days to present their case to the government, officials reportedly continued with the survey and construction activities. The presence of police further escalated tensions, leading to a heated exchange between farmers and GETCO staff. Several farmers accused the company of attempting to intimidate them to facilitate the project.

Local residents expressed concerns over the loss of farmland and grazing areas, stressing that smaller landholders are disproportionately affected. "The police are scaring us, but we will fight for our land. This is a conspiracy to benefit companies at the expense of farmers," said another farmer.

Banaskantha has witnessed several such disputes over land acquisition in recent years. Farmers had previously protested the Bharatmala project, citing inadequate compensation. The current conflict over the GETCO electricity line has once again highlighted the growing tensions between farmers and authorities over land rights and livelihoods.

As of now, farmers have threatened a large-scale agitation and expressed plans to approach the High Court if their demands are not addressed. While the project aims to strengthen the state’s electricity infrastructure, it comes at a significant cost to farmers, raising concerns over equitable compensation and land acquisition practices.

LCW researcher filed an RTI with the Banaskantha district administration seeking details of citizen complaints and the action taken on them. The authority did not share the information. However, in its reply, the Public Information Officer stated that no letters had been exchanged between the district administration and GETCO.
