Summary

In May 2025, paddy farmers in Maruvakkad padashekaram in Kochi protested against farms not being drained of saltwater despite the end of aquaculture period in pokkali farmlands of Chellanam. As climate change trigger an increased intrusion of saltwater, farmers accuse officials of allegedly focusing on year-round fish farming, neglecting the paddy cultivation.

The farmers demanded immediate removal of saltwater from the fields, authorities to ensure proper conditions for cultivating rice and vegetables and ensure strict compliance with the PLDA order by Collector. They further demanded implementation of CCTV surveillance in pump houses by the Agriculture Department and the regulation of water management in paddy fields by the state government.

The Maruvakkad fields, a vital agricultural area, have reported a decline in the soil quality due to regular saltwater intrusion. As a result, farmers who have depended on these fields for paddy cultivation for generations, are facing repeated crop failures. Repeated saltwater intrusion has made large parts of the land unusable, forcing many farmers to face financial hardship.

Locals believe that the root cause of the problem is the poor handling of sluice gates by the Irrigation Department. These gates are supposed to control water flow and keep sea water out during high tides and dry periods. However, residents say the gates are either not working properly or not being used correctly, which is allowing saltwater to keep flowing in and damaging the land.

As per an order issued by the Pokkali Land Development Agency (PLDA), led by the District Collector, all padasekharams were required to fully drain saltwater from their fields by 15 April 2025. However, in the case of the 425-acre Maruvakkad padasekharam, this drainage did not take place until May 2025.

Given the damages to their houses, crops and coconut trees, residents of Maruvakkad are demanding urgent action: proper functioning and timely closure of sluice gates by the Irrigation Department, effective plans to stop saltwater intrusion, and support for farmers who have lost their crops.
