Summary

In August 2025, farmers of Vasai village in Devbhumi Dwarka district of Gujarat protested against the state government's move to acquire fertile and grazing land for the construction of an airport to promote tourism and improve air connectivity to Dwarka, one of India’s most revered pilgrimage destinations.

Local farmers refused to give away their fertile farmland and grazing land, which they claim is the the backbone of their livelihood and the village economy. According to the villagers, survey teams have already identified nearly 400 acres of land in and around Vasai for acquisition, which includes "gauchar" (village grazing) land. Farmers say these lands have supported their families for generations through agriculture and animal husbandry. Many villagers depend on cattle rearing as an additional source of income, and the proposed project, they believe, would destroy both their crops and their access to pasture.

According to an RTI response, about 100 farmers from Vasai village on 12 August 2025 submitted a detailed petition to the Gujarat Chief Minister and the District Collector, expressing strong opposition to the project. The petition noted that Vasai contributes nearly half of the total vegetable production in Dwarka taluka, and any large-scale land acquisition would severely disrupt the region’s food supply chain. The farmers also stated that, with limited water sources and a semi-arid climate, alternative land for farming or grazing is not available nearby, making displacement even more difficult.

The villagers also drew attention to the presence of ancient religious and cultural sites within the proposed project area. Among them is the temple of Shri Sitawari Mataji, believed to be thousands of years old and deeply revered by the local community. They warned that airport construction could damage these sacred sites and pose safety risks to the densely populated settlements around them.

In their appeal, the farmers urged the government to reconsider the decision and shift the airport to a more suitable location. They pointed out that an earlier survey had identified Navaghevad village in Okhamandal as a better option, given its proximity to the seashore and the availability of barren land that would cause minimal disruption. The petition concluded with a plea to protect Vasai’s farmland and grazing areas, which the villagers describe as their lifeline. “Our land and cattle are our only means of survival,” the petition stated, calling on the authorities to ensure that development does not come at the cost of the community’s livelihood and heritage.
