Summary

On 30 April 2025, the Aligarh Municipal Corporation (AMC) took possession of 41 bighas of land in Bhamola Maasi village, which has long served as the Muslim University Riding Club (MURC) grounds at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

The estimated market value of the disputed land reportedly exceeds Rs 126 crore.

While the civic body alleged that AMU is unlawfully occupying large portions of government land, the university claimed that the land in question is legally owned by the university.

“The university holds all relevant documents, archival records, and legal evidence establishing its rightful ownership, which are being duly submitted before the appropriate legal forums. The land in question has been under the university’s ownership for several decades, and there has never been any question of its illegal occupation by the university,” AMU said in a press release on 1 May 2025.

It further stated that the land was lawfully acquired under the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, and has been in continuous, peaceful possession for almost 80 years.

AMU’s chief spokesperson, Vibha Sharma, told media, “The Nagar Nigam did not serve any formal notice to the University before the takeover. We are taking all necessary legal steps to re-establish AMU’s rightful ownership of the land.”

In May 2025, a group of 23 students of Aligarh Muslim University filed a public interest litigation (PIL) at the Allahabad High Court challenging land-grabbing activities by the Aligarh Municipal Corporation.

The petitioners condemned the move as an “illegal, arbitrary, and perverse act” and urged the court to direct the Aligarh Municipal Commissioner to not interfere with the possession of the AMU Riding Club land, and to instruct the Aligarh Senior Superintendent of Police to remove the board stating that the property belongs to AMC.

On 28 May 2025, a bench of Justices M K Gupta and Anish Kumar Gupta rejected the PIL, stating that they cannot entertain the PIL at the behest of students of law and other courses. However, it added that its dismissal should not be taken to be expression of any opinion regarding title of Nagar Nigam or Aligarh Muslim University over the subject land.
