Farmers in the Rajatalab tehsil of Varanasi are protesting against the proposed acquisition of 60 hectares of fertile land for the ‘Kashi Sports City’ project. In January 2026, the project of a 347-acre urban township and sports complex was first approved by the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA), covering Ganjari, Harsosh, and Harpur villages. The project is located near the under-construction international cricket stadium at Ganjari, with a proposed budget of around ₹200 crore.
In February 2026, the tension escalated when the District Magistrate issued a preliminary notification for a Social Impact Assessment (SIA) linked to the project, prompting villagers to mobilise against the acquisition over fears of losing productive farmland and rural livelihoods.
According to the SIA notification page no. 13, the project proposes to purchase the land through a mutual agreement with the affected farmers. It further states that if the department fails to reach an agreement for purchase with these individuals, the land will then be acquired through the formal process under the Land Acquisition Act, 2013.
In March 2026, Yogiraj Patel, a farmer leader from Varanasi’s Rajatalab area, began alleging intimidation by authorities, including claims that the VDA was branding houses as illegal and threatening to demolish them.
The farmers participating in the rally stated that their livelihood depends on farming. Therefore, they will not surrender their agricultural land for acquisition at any cost. They said that a resolution to the dispute is possible only if the government takes a positive decision on their demands.
By June 2026, the VDA had listed this project among three mega township projects it was advancing, including a 160‑acre Sports City component at Ganjari, backed by ₹400 crore in state seed capital for the townships programme. According to a report by Dainik Bhaskar shared in July, farmers continued protesting against the land acquisition in Rajatalab tehsil. On 12 July, farmers from Ganjari and Harsos villages organised a bicycle rally, going door to door to raise awareness and encourage villagers to join the movement.
