Summary

On 4 April 2025, Somnath municipal authorities demolished over 70 residential houses built on survey number 831 to clear 6000 square metres of encroached land. During the drive, protesters, including Congress MLA Vimal Chudasama, clashed with officials. At least 40 protesters were booked on charges of rioting and injuring three on-duty policemen during the demolition drive.

Officials stated that prior notices were served to the residents but the structures had not been vacated. The drive was carried out in the presence of Provincial Officer Vinod Joshi, Mamlatdar Shamla, and Somnath Municipal Chief Officer Parthiv Parmar and heavy police presence. Soon the residents, particularly women, started to protest against the drive by lying down on the roads to block the bulldozers.

Protesters claimed that the demolition was being carried out illegally and that they have been living in the area for years. Authorities, however, proceeded with the demolition after dispersing the protest.

Meanwhile, Chudasama arrived at the site and vocally supported the protesting residents. In a heated exchange, Chudasama confronted revenue officials and police, accusing them of selectively targeting the poor.

During this incident, an ASI Hiren Jhala of Prabhas Patan police station sustained a head injury, while another policeman was also hit on the head. According to a report, Prabhas Patan police booked Chudasma and 39 others on charges of rioting, unlawful assembly, and causing hurt to public servants to prevent them from performing their duties. Those detained protesters were released from custody after serving them notices of appearance as per new provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The incident has sparked political tension in the region and raised questions about the fairness and timing of eviction drives, especially in areas where residents have longstanding ties and partial civic recognition.
