Summary

In December 2024, tea garden workers at Maijan Tea Estate, located in the Dibrugarh district of Assam, protested against an oil drilling project by Oil India Limited (OIL) on the estate land.

During the protest, led by the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), the workers raised concerns over environmental damage and threats to livelihood. They stated that the project threatens the survival of their community, which has relied on tea cultivation for generations.

Ranjan Munda, a tea worker who has lived in the estate for thirty years, told the Sentinel Assam: "We are mainly worried about the survival of our community and protecting our local environment."

On the environmental front, the workers fear that the project could worsen the already severe erosion crises plaguing the region near the river Brahmaputra, adjoining Burhi Dihing river, a lifeline for the region. The Maijan area, located next to the Brahmaputra river, has already been suffering from severe erosion, resulting in the disappearance of agricultural lands and homes disappearing into the river over the years.

The tea garden workers fear that the oil drilling activities might aggravate erosion and cause irreparable damage to the tea estate. "The drilling unit will not only aggravate the erosion problem but also threaten the delicate ecosystem of Maijan Beel. Without proper scientific assessment, we cannot allow any drilling in the area," ACMS vice president Nabin Chandra Keot was quoted as saying in a report by the Times of India.

They further expressed concern for Maijan Beel, a natural lake adjacent to the estate that serves as a habitat for diverse aquatic species. For the local community, the lake is not only a beautiful natural resource but also a vital component of the ecosystem.

Even though the estate is owned by the Assam Company India Ltd group, the workers claimed that the tea estate management should have consulted them before selling the land to Oil India as their livelihood depends on the estate. They demanded that drilling be stop and the land sale be reversed.
