Summary

Farmers in Sabarkantha district have launched a protest against the acquisition of their agricultural land for the construction of National Highway 168-G, which is set to pass through Mehsana, Idar, and Shamlaji.

The farmers argue that the project will result in the loss of critical resources, including 10 wells and 25 borewells, severely impacting their livelihoods. On 23 January 2024, more than 200 farmers gathered in Idar and held a rally that culminated in the submission of a petition to the provincial officer. Their demands include alternative land acquisition to avoid affecting fertile land, which is central to their livelihood.

The National Highway Authority of India has measured 170 hectares of land between Badoli and Maniyor villages as part of the project. This has sparked outrage among local farmers and herdsmen, who have been vocal in their opposition since the land acquisition process began. According to a survey by the Land Survey Department, confusion over new and differing survey numbers has fuelled the farmers’ resentment. Farmers from about eight villages have raised objections to the government notification, with at least 370 submitting formal protests.

Farmers argued that the existing state highways between Shamlaji and Idar, as well as between Idar and Mehsana, already serve the region adequately. Local leaders, including Kalpeshkumar Patel and Chimanbhai Patel, pointed out that the real issue lies in the absence of a bypass road in Idar city, which could solve traffic problems without displacing farmers as reported by the Bhaskar. They contended that the proposed new highway is unnecessary and will cause irreversible damage to agriculture and cattle grazing land.
