Summary

On 30 January 2026, farmers from several villages in Yelahanka taluk of Bengaluru Urban district opposed land acquisition for the proposed Bettahalasur-Rajanukunte railway project. Small and marginal farmers from Singanayakanahalli, Thimmasa, Bettahalasuru and surrounding villages under the banner of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) staged a protest, demanding that the project be cancelled as it would affect farmers’ livelihoods and destroy the local ecosystem.

The proposed Bettahalasuru–Rajanakunte railway bypass line requires the acquisition of approximately 29 acres, including privately owned agricultural land, dry and wet lands, lakes (kere), residential holdings, and vacant plots. The project comprises a short single-track rail bypass of about 6.14 km aimed at decongesting Yelahanka Junction and facilitating smoother freight movement and future suburban rail operations. As of January 2026, the estimated project cost stands at Rs 248 crore.

The alignment, which intersects the Heelalige–Rajanakunte (Kanaka Line) under the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project, was notified as a special railway project by the Central Railway Department, initiating land acquisition proceedings in several villages. In December 2025, the government also issued a revised gazette notifications under Section 20A(1) of the Railways Act, 1989, for land acquisition in multiple villages, including Bettahalasur and Rajanakunte in Yelahanka taluk.

Speaking to The New Indian Express, KRRS leader stated that the project is unscientific, of limited public utility and would adversely affect poor farmers by displacing livelihoods and destroying agricultural land, including mango, guava, and pomegranate plantations. They argued that Rajanakunte’s proximity to the Yelahanka railway junction makes the project unnecessary and instead called for improvements to existing infrastructure, such as functional railway underpasses and overpasses, which they said currently fail to serve local communities.
