Summary

A fresh proposal to establish a mega electronics manufacturing cluster on the Aranmula wetlands in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala has reignited a controversy over the proposed land use.

The new proposal, by a company named Taking off to the Future Pvt Ltd (TOFL), aims to convert the sprawling Aranmula Punja, a significant stretch of paddy fields and wetlands, into a hub for electronics manufacturing. The board of Kerala State IT Infrastructure Ltd (KSITIL)—the state's nodal agency for IT infrastructure—has reportedly approved key terms.

A decade ago, the same company had proposed the Aranmula airport project, which was later scrapped due to relentless and widespread protests from environmental groups and local communities. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had also refused to give a nod for the project. Now the same private company is proposing to develop a 600-crore electronics manufacturing cluster on the same 335.25 acres.

The Arannmula Anti-Airport Protection Committee is back with protests against the proposed project citing ecological concerns and to oppose any attempt to reclaim the wetlands. The secretary of the protest committee, K S Suresh told The Hindu, “This land has supported active paddy cultivation for seven years straight. Nearly 3,000 tonnes of paddy was harvested in just the first week of May. The next crop is due soon. More importantly, these wetlands act as floodplains that protect the entire region during the monsoon.”

While the KSITIL has backed the proposal, the state's Agriculture Department has strongly opposed the plan, arguing that the site in question is clearly unfit for industrial activity. In its report, the department noted: “Land conversion here will impact paddy cultivation on 65 acres, disrupt natural water channels, and trigger serious ecological imbalance.”

Aranmula Punja is a critical wetland ecosystem, deeply intertwined with the region's agriculture, biodiversity, and hydrological balance. Known for its extensive paddy cultivation, the Punja also acts as a natural flood buffer, safeguarding surrounding areas from the monsoon's fury, and serves as a vital habitat for numerous species of flora and fauna.

The stakes in the Aranmula wetlands dispute are incredibly high. For farmers, it is a battle for their livelihoods and their traditional way of life. For environmentalists, it is a fight to preserve one of Kerala's last remaining ecologically intact wetland systems. For the state, it represents a critical test of its commitment to sustainable development and the protection of its fragile natural heritage. The renewed controversy underscores the urgent need for a cohesive and ecologically conscious land-use policy that prioritises the conservation of vital ecosystems like the Aranmula Punja.
