This Rs 250-crore coal excavation project is under the Sonepur Bazari Open Cast Mine of Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL). In the first part of this project, ECL took land from residents of five villages but did not provide the rehabilitation package it promised and dumped the villagers in an area where they could not meet their basic needs. In the second part, ECL plans to acquire land of Shonpur Ruidaspara, Hansdiha, Punjabidanga, Bheladanga villages. In total, more than 10,000 people would have to be displaced in 11 villages. On 3 October 2016, members of 15 families, who till date have not got compensation and jobs in accordance with their demand, sat on hunger strike in front of the office of the general manager of ECLs Pandaveswar area. The ECL authorities reportedly say that the families couldnt be issued job offer letters due to some technical difficulties.
