Summary

In June 2025, members of a Dalit family were attacked allegedly by upper caste men while cultivating their agricultural land. The incident was reported from Narayanpura village of Lateri tehsil in Madhya Pradesh.

The conflict began when members of the Ahirwar family, who belong to the Dalit community, entered a field to sow soybean seeds for the farming season. The family asserted that the land was legally theirs and that they were exercising their right to cultivate it. However, during the sowing process, a group of men from the village, reportedly belonging to the Gurjar community, arrived at the field and confronted them. The group of men threatened the family and demanded that they stop farming the land. When the family members refused to leave, the attackers allegedly assaulted them with sticks and other objects. The violence left several members of the family injured. Reports suggest that at least four individuals, including women, sustained injuries during the attack and later required medical treatment.

In addition to the physical assault, the attackers reportedly seized the soybean seeds that the family had brought for sowing. This act effectively disrupted the farming activity and prevented the family from continuing their agricultural work. The alleged snatching of seeds and obstruction of cultivation suggests an attempt to assert control over the disputed land and intimidate the Dalit family from exercising their claimed rights over it.

Following the incident, the victims approached local authorities and filed a complaint with the police. Officials acknowledged that the incident stemmed from an ongoing land dispute between the two parties in the Lateri area of Vidisha district. The police stated that they had begun investigating the matter and would take appropriate action after reviewing the circumstances.

Meanwhile, Vidisha Collector Anshul Gupta hinted that part of the land may be government-owned. "The ongoing case between two parties would be decided expeditiously and no encroachment on government land will be allowed by anyone," he told NDTV.

While the immediate cause of the conflict appears to be a dispute over the right to cultivate a particular parcel of land in Lateri, the incident also reflects underlying social tensions related to caste and rural power dynamics. Such disputes often involve questions of land titles, customary control over agricultural areas, and resistance to changes in local hierarchies when historically marginalised communities attempt to assert legal rights.

As of May 2026, the situation remained under investigation by local authorities. The case highlights the continuing challenges faced by marginalised communities in securing safe and equitable access to land and agricultural livelihoods in rural parts of India.
