Summary

In September 2025, residents of Lakhanka village in Gujarat's Botad district protested against the construction of a 220 KV substation by the Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Limited (GETCO) on government grazing land. The government has approved the project on about 300 bighas of grazing land, where local youth have planted more than 4,000 trees at their own expense.

Angered by the construction, villagers including the Sarpanch, cattle owners, and farmers gathered in large numbers to stage a peaceful protest. Chanting slogans like “Save the trees” and “Save the cattle,” the villagers played Ramdhun as a mark of peaceful resistance.

The villagers clarified that they are not opposed to development but demanded that the substation be shifted to an alternative location. Representatives of the villagers warned that if the work is not stopped immediately, the entire village along with their cattle will migrate. They have also threatened to surround the taluka office and go on a hunger strike if their demands are ignored.

Sarpanch’s husband, Jayeshbhai Gabani, and Maldhari community leader, Jagdishbhai Bharwad, have also voiced these concerns. They emphasised that the grazing land is vital for the survival of local cattle and that cutting thousands of trees would harm both the environment and the community’s livelihood.

On 2 September 2025, the Lakhanka Gram Panchayat had written a letter to the Botad Collector, alleging that the power station was sanctioned using fake documents of grazing land. The Panchayat’s letter stated that no official resolution was passed for the land and warned that the project could lead to the destruction of over 4,000 trees and increase local temperatures due to its proximity to the village.

On the same day, Bharat Padhiyar, former BJP Mahamantri of Gadhada Taluka, sent a similar letter to the Collector echoing these concerns. The administration later forwarded both letters to the concerned department on 19 September 2025 for further action.
