Bara Thermal Power Project was conceived in 2009 by the Jaypee Group of Industries. The project is situated at Bara in Prayagraj district of Uttar Pradesh, India. The first phase of 1980 MW commenced operations in 2014. The second phase of a 3300 MW thermal power plant is under construction. However, the farmers, whose land was acquired for the project are unhappy with the compensation given for their land. They are demanding better compensation for their agricultural land. The farmers also claim the company had also made some promises with regards to providing job to one person of every family. The promises have not been fulfilled. In 2011, protests against the company turned violent. Police vehicles arrived at the protest scene. One farmer was killed in the police firing. The UP Government denies this. Protesters also damaged computers, vehicles, canteen and other facilities belonging to the company. The main contention for the protests were fulfilling their demand including providing employment for the affected at the project site. In 2016, it was reported that the farmers have given up on their demands for higher compensation. However, they launched a movement against the excess extraction of water from the Yamuna. In November 2019 Resurgent Power Ventures Pte. Limited (Resurgent Power) announced closing the deal for acquiring 75 per cent stake in Jaiprakash Associates Ltds Prayagraj Power. The power plant is in advanced stage of construction and the protests have reduced in intensity, Vindhyan Ecology and Natural History Foundation, a local non-profit, informed Land Conflict Watch in April 2020.
