Summary

On 13 December 2024, at least 44 households were evicted in an anti-encroachment drive in Assam’s Goalpara district. The drive took place in the Pancharatna area under the Balijana revenue circle and involved the use of heavy machinery and a substantial security presence.

The eviction drive was carried out by a joint team of several departments including Forest, APDCL and Police.

Residents received evection notices priori to the eviction drive, but many protested, stating that they had lived on the land for generations. "I was born in this house, and now my grandchildren are here. We cannot be asked to leave just like that," a woman claimed.

Concerns were raised regarding the lack of alternative arrangements for the displaced families. A senior resident questioned, “Where will the people live now?” Despite resistance from some residents, including women who attempted to obstruct the machinery, the authorities continued with the operation. The eviction affected 44 families, representing a variety of religious and linguistic backgrounds.

Senior officials, including Goalpara Additional District Commissioner Nabajyoti Pathak, Additional Superintendent of Police Anita Hazarika, and Circle Officer Puja Das, oversaw the eviction drive.
