Summary

In December 2024, a conflict broke out between the Tezpur University staff and PWD officials over an expansion of a road that links Poruwa Chariali with National Highway 15.

Tezpur University Teachers' Association (TUTA) alleged that the road expansion would result in the destruction of the historic Main Gate of TU, designed based on the sketch of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, being closed down permanently. In addition, they alleged that the expansion work could cause structural risk to the boundary wall of the campus, an animal house and a laboratory equipment, which are close to the boundary region.

A delegation from the university issued a memorandum to Sonitpur district commissioner Ankur Bharali on 11 December 2024, expressing dissatisfaction over the matter. The memorandum stated, “There is a lot of anguish among the University community regarding the unscientific widening of the road. This may boil over into agitation if timely action is not taken in the right spirit.”

Prof Shambhu Nath Singh, the vice chancellor of TU clarified that the road's expansion will be a threat to the university and impede its infrastructure and safety. He added that the university has already expressed their concerns to Assam CM in a letter dated 27.09.2024.

The university also submitted a letter to the additional chief engineer of PWD (Roads), Tezpur Zone, on 27 November 2024, raising safety concerns as the widening of the road would lead to the reduction of the gap between the gate and the new road.
