An eviction drive was carried out in the Mandia Bazar area of Barpeta district in Assam on November 21, 2023.
The district administration initiated the eviction to reclaim 1.6 acres of land that had been illegally occupied along the road sides after a directive from the Public Works Department (PWD). Heavy machinery like JCBs were employed to demolish multiple shops and other commercial structures.
The eviction notices were issued six months ago by the Circle Officer of Baghbar circle, Sunbar Chutiya, urging occupants to vacate voluntarily. While some complied, others persisted in holding onto the land.
Media reports suggested that the eviction drive was aimed at removing encroachments along the road for the benefit of the commuters and residents.
A local resident, Aftab Ali, expressed support for the decision, stating, "For the development of a place, roads are its utmost necessity, so I appreciate the decision of the administration to widen the road."
Another local resident, Mohamad Shohidul Islam, however, alleged destruction of a sacred place and requested a new place of worship.
Revenue Circle Officer of Baghbar, Sunbar Chutiya, informed LCW that it was not an eviction drive since the evictees were not residents. According to him, it was rather a demolition of unauthorised commercial properties built on government land.
The total number of affected people could not be obtained from reports and officials.
