Summary

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) carried out an eviction drive in the Noonmati's Forest Gate area of Guwahati on 30 January, 2024.

The drive targeted numerous unauthorised establishments including shops and houses built on the land owned by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL).

Those impacted by the eviction expressed their dismay, claiming they had not been given any advance notice, leaving them feeling vulnerable and helpless. Consequently, the affected individuals voiced their opposition vehemently, resulting in heightened tensions within the vicinity.

One of the evicted people stated, “We have not received any notice for the eviction drive from the administration. We have been living here for many years, but suddenly, we were evicted. Where will we go now? It's a gross injustice done by the administration because they should have served us notice before the eviction drive.”

Previously, the district administration of South Salmara Mankachar district in Assam has undertaken eviction drives targeting encroachments on land in the district headquarters of Hatsingimari.
