Summary

In April 2017, around 500 farmers from multiple districts gathered for a day long hunger strike outside the road transport office in Perundurai city in Erode district of Tamil Nadu. They were protesting the setting up of high tension power cables over their agricultural lands.

These high tension power cables are expected to supply electricity generated by a wind power plant located in Rasipalayam village in Dharapuram taluk of Tiruppur district. First proposed in 2014, this plant will be run by the Tamil Nadu Energy Generation and Distribution Company Limited.

The wind power project is at Rasipalayam Substation and the high tension transmission line would run through various districts, cutting across farmlands. Both of these proposals have created unrest amongst farmers of the affected area due to fear of losing their lands to the project.
