Summary

The Dimapur Naga Students Union (DNSU) has expressed concerns over a sub-centre set up by the Department of Health and Family Welfare within the premises of the Government Middle School building in Midland, Dimapur. The union demanded the relocation of the sub-centre, citing risk posed to not only to the health of the general populace but also to that of the students and teachers.

In a press release, the union stated, “The officials of DNS visited GMS Midland school 25 September 2024 and verified that the school has obtained the patta of the land where the school building is presently standing basing on the Gift Deed from the donors namely, Bhupen Paira, Mohan Paira, and Kumar Paira, all sons of late Gopinath Paira, and that the land legally belongs to the school and no other entity or group can claim ownership to the said land.”

The DNSU also highlighted that on 5 July 2024, the Principal Director of School Education issued an official directive instructing the medical department to vacate the premises immediately. However, as of 6 November 2024, DNSU officials confirmed that the medical department continued to occupy the premises unlawfully.

The union also voiced its disappointment at the Department of School Education's failure to safeguard its assets and resources from what it characterised as “wanton encroachments and infringements by people with vested interests who aim to secure government contracts from multiple departments by presenting the same building repeatedly to show that contract works have been executed.”

The office of DNSU stated, “During our visit to the school, it came to the knowledge of DNSU that the Midland Council had been illegally occupying the office of the Midland Council continuously for two decades without holding public meeting for even a single time. We demand the Deputy Commissioner to immediately dissolve the present Midland Council and a new team, to be democratically elected by the residents of Midland.”

The office further said, “The office of the DNSU is shocked to learn that the medical department started its dispensary on the first floor of the school building in the year of 2011 provided by the Midland Council measuring 35×26, which was not even the property of the Midland Council. Here the modus operandi of the officials of the medical department is questionable as the existence of medical facility in the school premises is untenable and should be justified by the medical department and the Midland Council.”

DNSU also made an appeal to the residents of the area to collaborate and solve the issue. The union also further stated that the Council and the administrators would be held accountable for any repercussions.
