In February 2026, the Assam Forest Department carried out an eviction drive in the eastern part of the Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary, in the Phutaljar area under Rupahihat in Nagaon district, Assam. The operation targeted large-scale encroachment on government land within the sanctuary.
Officials said that thousands of bighas of protected land had been illegally occupied and converted into paddy fields and fisheries. The encroachers had been cultivating crops using ploughs, fertilisers, and other inputs over several months.
During the eviction, forest officials from the Gorajan Range Office under the Nagaon Forest Division used elephants to destroy standing paddy crops grown on the encroached land. The crops, raised after months of labour, were cleared as part of the operation.
Local residents alleged that these activities had continued for a long time without intervention. They stated that although the encroachment and cultivation were clearly visible, no action had been taken for an extended period.
Residents also claimed that near the Singimari Forest Range Office, practices such as field burning, illegal farming, and fishing in sanctuary water bodies had been taking place regularly, yet the authorities had remained silent.
Officials added that similar operations may continue in other affected areas to protect forest land.
