Summary

At least eight villages in Haryana’s Jhajjar are opposing the proposed 150 KLD grain-based ethanol distillery plant at Goriya village. Villagers claim that the plant, planned over 15 acres, will degrade soil fertility and threaten agricultural livelihoods. They further say that the proposed project, at an estimated cost of Rs 360.13 crore, will increase environmental pollution in the area.

Villagers allege that the parties proposing the plant acquired the land without mentioning any plan of setting up a chemical plant and the land use was altered without proper public consent. However, the district administration authorities state that a public hearing was conducted for environmental clearance of the project on 20 May 2025.

On 19 June 2025, a mahapanchayat was held in Goriya village to discuss the matter in detail and a 20-member committee was formed with representatives from all eight villages to chart the next course of action. Representatives also decided to give the district administration an ultimatum and said that if the administration fails to resolve the issue in seven days, a 40-village panchayat will be convened after seven days.

Residents from eight villages including Goriya, Bhandgi, Korhad, Mumtazpur, Lilodh, Mohanbari, and Jhanswa, were present for deliberations.

“We had earlier met district officials to express our concerns, but our grievances were ignored. As a result, we convened a panchayat involving eight villages to determine our collective response,” a protester told The Tribune.
