Summary

On 28 December 2025, a portion of environmentalist Jadav Payeng’s Molai Kathoni 2.0 reforestation project along the Brahmaputra river in Assam’s Majuli district was allegedly set afire, destroying his years of conservation efforts. Over 5,500 saplings, planted since 2022, were reportedly reduced to ashes, along with bird nests, eggs, and shelters for small creatures.

Payeng, a recipient of India’s fourth-highest civilian award Padma Shri and popularly known as the Forest Man of India, had launched Molai Kathoni 2.0 in 2022 to restore degraded river islands vulnerable to erosion. This was an extension to his first Molai forest, spanning nearly 550 hectares, which proved as a beacon against erosion in the flood-prone Brahmaputra basin.

According to Payeng, his daughter, Munmuni, and others rushed to the spot and managed to control the fire. "Nearly one million saplings were planted across around 7.5 bighas of land. A portion (1.25 hectares) has been damaged, but the quick response saved the plantation from complete destruction," he said.

Locals and environmentalists allege that the move was a targeted act to remove resistance to illegal sand extraction since the forest’s expansion directly threatened mining access routes and exposed irregularities in permits granted in ecologically fragile riverine zones.

Meanwhile, activists claim that the fire was intended to intimidate conservationists who consistently opposed both legal and illegal mining along the Brahmaputra. They flagged that mining permissions continued despite repeated objections from local residents and environmental groups, pointing to a deep-rooted nexus.

Following the fire, widespread protests from environmental groups, students, and civil society erupted across the state, demanding a halt to mining activities in sensitive areas and better protection for Payeng and his family.

On 6 January 2026, the Jorhat administration temporarily suspended sand mining activities in the area and ordered an inquiry by forest and police officials to identify those behind the arson.

Illegal sand mining activities, driven by construction booms, has ravaged the Brahmaputra, causing erosion that leads to frequent flooding. Broader data shows sand mining violence claimed 136 lives across North India in recent years, with Assam’s floods affecting millions annually.
