Summary

Farmers in Mysuru staged a protest on 16 June 2025, opposing the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited’s (KPTCL) plan to install high-tension (HT) power transmission towers on farmlands near Basthipura and Kadakola.

Under the project, which is expected to be completed by 2026, a 400/220 KV power station will be built in Kadakola. And, a two-way power transmission line, 43.96 km long, will be constructed from the existing 400 KV Bastiupra-Shantigrama line to the proposed centre at Kadakola. However, the lines that would pass over farmlands in Bastipura and Kadakola will affect around 400 farmers, according to members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene, who are leading the protest.

“None of the farmers whose land falls directly under the proposed transmission line were given any notice about the project,” Manju Kiran, President of Hasiru Sene, told LCW. “Only those whose land will be used to install the transmission towers received an official notification,” he added. According to the minutes of a meeting held early this year between KPTCL officials, farmers and landowners, the latter two were informed that the project is “aimed at supplying good quality power to the surrounding areas of Kadakola village in Mysore taluk, reducing local power shortages and to meet future load.”

However, farmers claimed in the meeting that all the farmers whose land will be included in the project are small farmers. “There is a high risk that the land will become non-usable due to the high-tension wires atop it. This will not only decrease the productivity of farms but also the health of people in these villages,” Kiran told LCW.

Meanwhile, while the compensation for this project has been fixed at 30 percent of the village guideline value for the area where the power line passes, farmers claim that such a uniform method will not work. “Farmers grow different crops on different lands. The value of the compensation paid should match the value of the crops they have been growing,” Kiran said. This is not a lone incident. Farmers in nearby areas such as Hunsur haven’t been compensated fairly either after power transmission lines of KPTCL passed over their agricultural lands, resulting in loss of cultivable area for many of them.

As per the minutes of the meeting, KPTCL officials conveyed to the farmers that there is no scope for abandoning the project as it is an “ambitious project of the government.” The farmers, on the other hand, have been reluctant in allowing officials to survey their land, according to Kiran.

The farmers threatened to intensify their protest if the government doesn’t hold consultations with the affected parties before going ahead with the project.
