Summary

On the night of 26 January 2024, 14 under-construction houses belonging to Bengali families were vandalised by unidentified individuals in Kalai Para village in the Khowai district of Tripura. Sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme, fourteen houses were left completely destroyed, while the crops and cattle belonging to the victims were also allegedly looted.

The attackers left a warning on the streets, stating, "WANSEA GET OUT, RED ZONE," where "WANSEA" refers to the Bengali community in the local Kokborok dialect.

Outraged at the incident, local members of the Bengali community staged protests and blocked the Brahmachhara-Kankrachhara-Nunachhara road. Owing to the tense situation, protesters demanded the re-establishment of a special police officer (SPO) camp in the area that was removed a few months back.

The protestors alleged that miscreants attempted to stir disharmony between the Bengali and local tribal communities because of a social media post by Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, the leader of a local political party called TIPRA Motha.

On 25 January 2024, Debbarman had on Facebook posted a picture of an application written by one Nirmal Acharjee, addressed to the DM West, requesting land for landless non-tribals in Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) areas. About 68% of the state's area falls under TTAADC and is governed by the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Debbarman's accompanying statement declared, "Not one inch of land will be given in the Sixth Schedule area. If you want to settle people, then do so elsewhere in India; Tiprasa people have given enough sacrifice."

While the investigation into the incident is reportedly ongoing, a sizeable number of security forces have been deployed in the area to maintain order.

The road blockade was lifted on 27 January 2024 following the intervention of local MLA Bikas Debbarma, who assured the protesters of adequate security and compensation upon consultation with higher authorities.
